BLOG 6 – Testing

The design process is iterative. The developers need to test to find out problems with usability. In this week, we have tested our weather apps.

According to Jakob Nielsen, most of the problems can be found in less than 5 users. We divided our group in every three people to include one developer, one user and one recorder. After tests, we change the group to test different apps and have different users.

My AR Goggle and APP

In the test, I found some problems in my app. First of all, which is also a common question among all of us, our apps have so many common functions with others’. It is okay as they are all fundamental functions for a weather app, however, I think we should arrange them in a more special way to fit our user group. For instance for cyclists, make the wind speed more obvious than the temperature as it used to be.

The second question is in the testing process. When doing the test with physical models, the app actually does not have a logical action automatically. In this way, users need the guide from developers on how to use the app logically. Wireframes should be prepared before the test.

Moreover, there is another problem about my app and goggle. Although the goggle will not rely on fingers anymore, it still uses screen. But I found some of my classmates have some ideas about totally non-screen work, like Meng’s ski pole handle and Tiffany’s weather ball. They use light, heat, vibration and so on, which take full advantage of people’s senses.

In conclude, as for the app, specialized function arrangement should be used to fit special user group. As for the equipment, I should come up with some new ideas out of nowadays technology. And on the other hand, about the test, logic is very important to show the work properly and avoid missing.
