The article I chose is An internet of old things by Chris Speed. the internet of things means that with the development of technology, almost every object is connected to the internet in a certain way. The author argues that there is an inertia in society nowadays that values the future and ignores the past, for example industry focuses on producing new items and follows a linear time model. The authors want to discuss whether the Internet of Things can use its characteristic of not following a linear time model to break out of the current inertia and look to the past to provide rich immaterial value to things.
I think this theme is related to my practice. On the one hand, from the perspective of the time model of artistic creation, creation is not only a vision of the future, but also influenced by the past, especially the previous experiences of the creator. Design is not a one-way linear model of time. On the other hand, the concept of the Internet of Things is closely related to things that contain user experiences, such as apps. Many of the apps associated with machines are part of the Internet of Things. Adding other values to matter using the Internet of Things also means that designers have to find ways to enrich the non-material values of the app, creating the internet of old things.
