BLOG 5 – Contemporary Communication Design

For a contemporary successful communication design project, I would like to talk about the cooperation between the Nintendo 3DS and the Louvre Museum in France. Nintendo 3DS Guide: Louvre is designed for who are visiting the Louvre, but it also makes it possible to visit the Louvre virtually from home, as long as you have a 3DS and have downloaded the software. It includes an audio tour, museum photos, and images and 3D models of the collection.

I think the success of this project is that it makes full use of the orientation buttons of the handheld game machine and the dual screens including a touch screen. Visitors can experience more active things than passive things only, compared to conventional museums that only use QR codes to access text and video on the web. In an era where we often talk about the gamification of museums, Nintendo, a gaming company, has taken something that people often only use to play games and turned it into an interactive touring tool. It’s also more likely to excite kids and game lovers as well.
