Why sketch?

Maybe many people have a deviation in their understanding of sketch. After watching bill verplank’s speech, I am more convinced of my ideas.

Of course, it’s not a bad thing to have excellent painting ability, but we need to understand what we need as designers. Yes, the design process is complex, including research, analysis, re research and re analysis, then extract information and look for inspiration, visualization, and always remember to be user-centered.

However, in the process of obtaining inspiration or trying again, the sketch we need is not a perfect oil painting, nor is it a design drawing accurate to every millimeter. What we need is inspiration.

As Bill verplank showed in the video, although the designed product is complex, the whole design process is simplified into sketch draft, which can first make us clearly understand what we need to do or find an appropriate entry point. Secondly, it can also help us sort out the work needed in each step. However, there are also difficulties, such as the need for strong logical combing ability.

From generating inspiration (or customer needs), to exploring the story behind, to data collection, then looking for appropriate tools or carriers, and finally using sketch to show what we think in our brain. Of course, the final output does not necessarily need to be exactly the same, which is also the flexibility of sketch. Finally, it is realized step by step according to the content of sketch, This is what sketch can bring and its purpose.
